ALMOST 100 YEARS OF CHRISTIAN SCIENCE IN STUART, FLORIDA
In 1912, three people who were interested in Christian Science began meeting each Sunday morning in one another’s homes to read the lesson together. Eventually as more people moved into the community who were members of Christian Science Churches or The Mother Church or were simply interested in Christian Science, meetings were held in the Woman’s Club of Stuart.
In 1922 this group organized a Christian Science Society with eighteen charter members. Services were held in the Women’s Club beginning in 1924. During the following years, the Society was able to hold lectures and in 1925 opened a Reading Room.
In 1941, property on what was then Fourth Street and is now East Ocean Boulevard was purchased. A new edifice was completed on February 22, 1942, and was dedicated on February 28, 1943.
In 1953, the Society fulfilled all the requirements necessary to become a branch church, and was known as First Church of Christ, Scientist, of Stuart, Florida. On March 31, 1961, the Church was incorporated as a non-profit corporation under the laws of the State of Florida as First Church of Christ, Scientist, Stuart, Florida, Inc.
Prior to 1962, Sunday School classes were held in various locations. In 1961, construction of a Sunday School wing adjoining the church edifice was started. The first classes were held in the new quarters in February, 1962.
The church was growing with an active membership, and ideas were discussed concerning the enlargement of the church edifice. It was felt that Readers’ rooms were needed, and since the membership did not seem ready to build a Reading Room in a location away from the church, it was decided to ask an architect to draw up plans for the church which would include a Reading Room in the building as well as Readers’ rooms, a Music and Literature Distribution activities room, a Clerk’s office, and additional rest rooms.
The architect’s plans were presented to the membership and approved. Construction was begun in the summer of 1975. Occasionally the Wednesday evening meeting was held in the Sunday School, but the builders were able to keep the area open enough to continue the Sunday service and most Wednesday evening meetings in the church auditorium.
What a joy it was when the newly renovated church held its first service on February 1, 1976. In succeeding years many new members were added, the Sunday School flourished and the Reading Room was active.
A Christian Science Lecture continues to be given each year. Improvements to the building and its facilities continue to be made as needed, including interior design, organ upgrades, painting the building and a new roof in 2005.
The church continues to give a loving welcome to all visitors and looks forward to a second century.
All are welcome to attend the Sunday Service where the congregation joins in singing hymns and praying together The Lord’s Prayer, listening to a vocal solo, participating in the responsive reading, then hearing the lesson-sermon for the week.
Sunday School provides young children and teens the opportunity to learn how to use Christian Science in their lives every day. Younger children begin by learning the Lord’s Prayer, the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes while the older students are taught through questions and answers using the weekly lesson-sermon that is being read in our church service.
